The Future of Robotics

Brief

Create a vision for the future of robotics.

Solution

As a team we defined the areas in which these robots could be implemented. Choosing an area where robots could not only improve the current experience but ultimately work with each other and humans to provide a fuller and much more complete service. We presented the concept and strategy as a movie to Hitachi which demonstrated a vision of how robots could successfully integrate into everyday life.

My Role

To identify areas in which robots could be successfully deployed we first looked into a range of public spaces. Each one was analysed for pain-points and the overall journey mapped out. This allowed us to identify initial opportunities.

To fully understand the scenario, I chose one core space to gather insights. The research had to encapsulate the current experience whilst also scoping for the potential future technologies to disrupt.

I presented my findings in a joint team and client workshop and went on to lead the mapping scenario for my chosen space. Following the workshop I was responsible as part of a team to finesse our creative outputs forming them into an initial storyboard for the movie.

My work was taken forward, laying the foundations for a Robot Interaction guidelines document. This document would encapsulate the design language and characteristics the robot would have to possess in order to make it globally accepted and seem more human. My research provided guidance on look and feel of the robot itself all the way through to its interface. The outcome was a truly integrated approach which also guided the physical form as well as the digital.

For the final deliverable I was responsible for the UX and UI of the final robot interface. This was a significant factor in the movie and was key to delivering insight into the robot’s character. I brought this to life through wireframes, storyboards and developed interface visuals.

I was also responsible for the more simple animations included in the final edit. I developed these in After Effects.

Summary

Hitachi gave very positive feedback and stated that the brief had been met. They opted to use the video to inspire their own designers to consider new opportunities for robots.

This project allowed me to deploy my large set of skills across the whole design process, contributing to multiple deliverables.
